Alas the seasons have begun to change. The racing season in my part of the world has come to an end. Thoughts of this past season are still fresh in my memory. Some good, some great, and some- well bad, though there were very few objectionable moments in my racing travels of 2008. So here I am at the controls (keyboard) tapping out the usual drivel for ponder over.
It has been quite a year. For a while I thought I might attend more funerals than races. Four funerals in the first six months of the year, four more than I hope I have to attend again anytime soon.
ODDS AND ENDS, AND OTHER STUFF
In a recent post (see below) I logged how many NCRA "OUTLAW" Sprint Car series events (with the help of the great reference guide-KEVIN ECKERT'S page) I attended from 1988 to the final series year 2004, and it amounted to sixty events. I really enjoyed the races put on by what I steadfastly believed was one of the best regional sprint car series at one time. The competition in the NCRA was damn good for many years. In the latter years Gary Wright owned the series, (ten-time champion 92-01) but in the early years of the series it was anybody’s to win, and many did. The NCRA never toured on its own to too many "BIG" venues outside of "DEVIL'S BOWL SPEEDWAY","TULSA SPEEDWAY", and "EIGHTY-ONE SPEEDWAY,” but the impact of many of the series drivers is still being felt today in other series such as WoO, ASCS, and USCS. There was a time I thought NCRA could stack up with some of the other '410 OUTLAW traveling series, and hold its own corner on the market rather well, but the sometimes bull-headed management of the series seemed to contribute to its demise. Only to be replaced with another regional recreational-like '360 series. The '360 series that is now sanctioned as NCRA's marquee open-wheel division, and it just doesn't seem to stand up to some of the other '360 series, and its kind of sad for those of us who once held NCRA in such high regard as an organization we would loyally support.
For the 2009 racing season NCRA is adding three more open wheel classes to its stable of touring series. The additions include a 305’ sprint car series, a southern sport mod, and an Oklahoma modified series. Since I have read about this recently on the web, I wondered why the leaders of NCRA would want to add to there roster of racing series, when they can hardly fill out full series schedules for the classes (360 Sprint Car, Late Model, & Modified) they already have? Seems to me that they would want to concentrate on primping up the three pre-existing series, and make them more attractive to drivers, track promoters, and try garnering more fan and media attention to them. It’s just an opinion mind you, but the NCRA just doesn’t seem to carry as much clout as it used to.
I only attended one NCRA sanctioned event this year. August 16th I caught a 360 Sprint car event at Eighty-One Speedway. This is the first year since 1977 that I have only attended one NCRA sanctioned event.
I am curious to see how many drivers plan to follow the new and improved (and newly badged) LUCAS OIL ASCS SPRINT CAR DIRT SERIES in 2009. With the Lucas Oil group replacing the O’Reilly Auto Parts, as the title sponsor, a bold new schedule and a larger pay out for drivers is promised.
RANDOM RANTS-
Terry Gray ought to jump back on the ASCS bandwagon again full time. He has nothing left to prove in the USCS series (6-time champion). Problem is, without him and at least of late, Tim Crawley, P-Dubs USCS series might be on borrowed time. Just a thought, but maybe you ought to go a little further west of the Mississippi River this next year Pete. Perhaps you could get a couple of shows at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock. It’s a sure bet they would be well attended, both in car count in the pits and asses in the stands.
Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, KS is one of the nicest facilities I have visited in a while. Great people, great racing surface,(DAMN FAST)and one of the best fried baloney sandwiches on the planet!!!!
Dodge City Raceway Park. You need to put it on your list of tracks to visit. I have stated this before in past blogs, and I'll stand by my opinion, that its hands down one of the top twenty racing facilities in the country.
Hope to see you down the road.....
